Theatre In Education
Theatr Powys is committed to young people, their experiences, problems and engagement with the world. The condition of the young and the role of the imagination in the development of young people are central to the artistic and educational agenda of the Company.
The central educational and cultural questions informing the work of the Company are:
What is human about human beings?
How did we get that way?
How can we be made more so?
The Company understands that Theatre in Education (TIE) is a distinct methodological practice that is particularly empowering of the young people who take part in the work. In the school curriculum, feelings, understanding and action are often separated; in TIE, they are united. Young people who experience the Company's work engage in an active, sensuous and intellectual process of coming to know a process through which they are encouraged to empathise, share equal status, exercise power in determining outcomes and take on responsibility for those outcomes as events unfold.
Working socially through the mediums of theatre and drama, young people are invited to engage imaginatively - to imagine the real. The contradictions, dilemmas, dangers and choices to be experienced and acted on within the event become immediate, dynamic and have real implication and consequence.
In addition to its provision for primary and secondary schools throughout Powys, the Company works with students at college and university level who are studying in the fields of education and performing arts.
The Company offers a free service to Powys schools.
