Mid Powys Youth Theatre
Mid Powys Youth Theatre (MPYT) has been producing high quality theatre for community audiences in Powys and beyond since 1987 when it was established by Theatr Powys as part of its community theatre development programme.
Funded and managed by Theatr Powys, MPYT provides an unique opportunity for young people in Powys. Over the years, the company has given confidence and esteem to hundreds of young people and continues to serve as a social and cultural hub for its members.
Every year, MPYT produces a large-scale autumn production, with companies of up to 40 young actors, musicians and technicians working under professional leadership and guidance. The quality of these productions, and the commitment of the young people to the occasion, has ensured a loyal following and established for MPYT a well deserved place on the cultural map of Mid Wales. Recent performances include Nicholas Nickleby, Lysistrata and Watership Down.
MPYT also offers opportunities to take part in collaborative, smaller cast productions where members work closely with professional directors and actors from Theatr Powys. Recent performances include Victoria's Children, devised by the Company for the Llandrindod Victorian Festival and Edward Bond's The Children, which played to great acclaim at the Wales Millennium Centre.
A varied programme of professionally led, weekly workshops take place throughout the year at the Drama Centre on Tuesday evenings. There is also scope for member led projects. Recent examples of performances initiated, written, produced and performed by MPYT members themselves include Shades Of Blue, an evening of dance, drama, poetry and music which raised funds for the victims of the Indonesian Tsunami and Not In My Name, a benefit performance for victims of war.
MPYT's other activities include summer schools, cultural exchanges and involvement with youth theatre conferences and festivals.
MPYT is open to all young people between the ages of 14 and 24.
